A HEARING to determine if the Edgeware Pool rebuild can go ahead has been cancelled with a decision due in two weeks. A resource consent hearing was scheduled for Thursday, but due to no submitters wishing to be heard, an independent commissioner will make a decision within two weeks. The pool was demolished due to deterioration in November 2006. Since then the community has been trying to get it replaced. The closure sparked protest marches, public meetings and bitter
clashes with councillors and former mayor Garry Moore. A small number of residents had written submissions against the proposal, which would include a 25m heated outdoor pool; a children’s pool with jet fountains; and a building with clubrooms, changing rooms and a cafeteria. But they did not want to speak at last week’s hearing. THE LONG running saga of the Edgeware Pool will take another turn in a couple of weeks. We report on page 1 today that a hearing to determine whether the pool gets resource consent has been cancelled. A commissioner will make a ruling without hearing submitters because a number of people involved in the debate now don’t want to be heard. That means almost certainly the consent will be granted and then the fundraiing will get rolling in earnest. There’s plans for a lot of facilities right across Christchurch but the timelines keep extending. That’s giving the council some breathing room from a finance point of view, but it’s about time some of the concrete started pouring. –Barry Clarke

Making bus rides Firefighters force entry more enjoyable to wake sleeping couple Fashion By Andrew King FIREFIGHTERS WERE forced to break into a Bishopdale flat to prevent a fire while the couple inside slept. Neighbours raised the alarm at 7.45am on Thursday when they saw smoke escaping from a Veronica Pl flat, alerting the Fire Service there might be people inside. They also heard the smoke alarm. When firefighters arrived they banged on the door to alert anyone who was inside. When there was no response they cut their way through safety latches on a window and climbed in. A pot on the oven had been left on and smoke was filling the flat. It was taken outside and the couple was woken up by firefighters. Harewood station officer Russell Fairbrass said the couple was lucky their bedroom was closed as smoke filled the flat. “The (smoke) alarm was audible through the door so I’m

Ashleigh Monk MAGDA Lorenzo has spent the last two months delivering books to bus stops for commuters to enjoy. Ms Lorenzo started the initiative ‘The Commuting Book’ to encourage reading and the use of public transport. The idea is for people to pick up a book at their bus stop, read it while they ride the bus, then drop it off when they get to their stop. “The idea behind The Commuting Books is to create opportunities for people to engage in reading by bringing them (books) into public spaces,” she said. “I see bus stops a social hub and it’s very interesting the way you can engage in conversation with people waiting for the bus with you and sometimes the books are an excuse to do that.” Ms Lorenzo delivered the books herself on her bicycle she had named ‘Mantis’. “It depends on the weather that day; I can ride for several hours around the city. Normally I choose one of the bus routes
and leave the books at the stops on that route.” Each book had a ‘Commuting Book’ sticker with informations and instructions on the project. Although Ms Lorenzo has not had much feedback she said the travelling of books was a good sign. “Some of them are responding through Facebook. They are being very generous with their comments and their feedback. It’s very encouraging.” Ms Lorenzo estimated she had distributed about 230 books so far, and hoped that number would rise as the project developed. “We hope to be implementing a few different aspects to the project in the next couple of months.”

By Gordon Findlater AT THIS time of the year former Super Rugby player Ged Robinson is normally getting towards peak fitness ahead of a busy season. This year he’s all about keeping Christchurch well fed with what he calls a Kiwi take on Italian style pizza. Fed by Ged will be one of many tasty and nutritious options available for those needing refuelling following The Star City2Surf. The former Crusader, whose mobile wood fire pizza oven is regularly based outside Il Magro espresso bar in Papanui, will be awaiting runners at the finish area of next month’s event. Outside of rugby Robinson has always had a love for food. After recently hanging up the boots he’s now had more time to concentrate on that love. “I’m a front rower so I love food. I moved to Melbourne and played over there for three years. My wife
and I spent a lot of time checking out the city and enjoying the food, that probably fired up the taste buds even more,” said Robinson. His first experiments with pizza came during his time while playing for the Melbourne Rebels, regularly feeding teammates on his own creations. His passion for fuelling a squad has grown ever since. After spending a decade as a professional rugby player Robinson knows all about nutrition, something he’s taken to the oven. “Italian style pizza has really high
quality meat and really low in sugar and salt. I do make brown flour pizza dough as well as the traditional white. It’s all really good quality, non-processed food,” said Robinson. Robinson is continually working on new creations and by the time March 19 rolls around he may just have a new recipe to unveil. News Yacht club’s $1.17m shed By Tom Doudney THE Christchurch Yacht Club is hoping it will soon get the go ahead for a new rowing shed to replace the one demolished after the June 2011 earthquake. The Moncks Bay-based club wants to build a new $1.17 million shed in a more seaward position to allow room for the Coastal Pathway walking and cycle route between it and the Trevor Kite road. Building the shed further seaward means higher costs. The club already has resource consent and a building permit for the new shed. It has also asked the city council to contribute $327,595 towards the extra costs associated with providing for the Coastal Pathway, along with an additional $239,713 because the public will have use of the shed’s decks and ramps. The club has raised $607,000 so far, and has carried out soil testing. It has met with both the city council and the Coastal Pathway group over the last

Urlich returns to the stage
Fashion By Tom Doudney IT’S BEEN a quiet 18 years for Margaret Urlich – and that’s just the way she likes it. The New Zealand Music and Aria award-winning singer hasn’t released new music since Second Nature in 1999. Next month, she will perform with her former When The Cat’s Away bandmates Annie Crummer, Debbie Harwood and another longtime collaborator, Sharon O’Neill, at Lincoln’s Selwyn Sounds concert. They will be part of a starstudded line up also featuring Dragon, Mi-Sex, The Jordan Luck Band and Jason Kerrison. These days Urlich lives on a rural property in Australia’s New South Wales southern highlands, halfway between Sydney and Canberra. Although she never made a decision to stop recording, she has been busy over the last two decades raising two children, Ava, 18, and Carlos, 15, with husband George Gorga, and teaching singing in high schools. She often mentors young singers before they
sit their university entrance exams. Urlich said she didn’t miss the limelight. “I quite like being normal. I only ever started singing because I just love it. The whole fame side of it, I didn’t think about that much and it always felt a little bit uncomfortable for me,” she said. “I don’t need to have a high profile to be happy. In fact, I think the opposite is true for me.” Although she has been living across the ditch since the early 1990s, she comes back to play in New Zealand about five or six times a year, usually with Crummer, Harwood, O’Neill and Shona Laing. “It’s always very satisfying going on stage with these women,” Urlich said. “I have known Annie and Debbie for 30 years now and we are still very good friends and we love singing together.” In spite of her long absence from the recording studio, Urlich does not rule out new music in the future, especially now her children are coming

to the end of their high school years. However, the music would have to meet her own high standards. “I still love singing and performing, but I guess with the recording side of it, I haven’t felt that I have the energy to make it as amazing as I would like to make it,” she said. “I am never saying never but it does take a lot of energy. I am drawn to texture and contrast, and my process consists of straightening and perfecting, then pushing the paint in a freer, less controlled manner. As part of the city council’s decision to go paperless to save money, the 37 community board members will receive 12-inch iPad Pros and keyboard to keep record of meeting times, reports access agendas, information and book appointments electronically. The iPads’ and keyboard cases for all the board members cost $51,171 – a saving of $38,829 on what the city council spent last year on production, delivery and disposal costs of agendas and other information. The city council decided to go paperless in the hopes of saving money, city councillors started the trend late last year when they were given electronic devices. The Linwood-CentralHeathcote Community Board was set to be the first community board to follow suit at its meeting on Monday, but the devices weren’t ready. City council governance process lead, Matt Boult, said the community boards will start going paperless in March.

By Bridget Rutherford DISCUSSIONS ON whether to approve a heritage grant for the Public Trust building will take place behind closed doors today. The category 2 historic building on Oxford Tce was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, however, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority deemed it repairable. City councillors were to discuss the approval for a central city landmark heritage grant for the building in the public excluded section of their meeting today. But they would not talk about what was to be discussed when asked by Star Media. Ben Gough’s business Tailorspace owns the 1920s artdeco building and had applied to CERA twice to demolish it. Both were denied. Last year, it successfully applied to have the building’s heritage status removed in the Christchurch Replacement District Plan. Chief executive Brett Gamble said it was still reviewing its options for the building and site
copies will be available in libraries. He said board members can use the device for personal use, as long as it isn’t “excessive”, at a cost to the city council or used by family and friends. When city council representatives leave Mr Boult said they will have to return the device, which will then be reused by either their replacement or within the city council.

Scorpions coach Tai Arona heaped praise on Taipari’s knowledge of the game. “He’s very intelligent and always seemed to be a step ahead of the play. If we had a game plan that needed to be executed, he was the guy to go to,” said Arona. Taipari comes from a strong league upbringing. His father, Joseph Taipari senior, played at centre for the Hornets in the 1980s and represented Canterbury. The teenager has a bright future of his own in league and has also proven a star in other codes. He’s previously represented Canterbury and New Zealand in touch, and has been compared to Shaun Johnson who was also a promising player in his teenage years. Taipari was also touted for big things in last year’s first XV rugby competition with CBHS before
a serious knee injury ruined his season. He played under-14 and 15 A rugby for the school before concentrating on league for a season. He then had a crack at the first XV in 2016 and made a huge impression on CBHS first XV coach Mike Drury before the season-ending injury late in the preseason. “He’s and incredible ball player, he’s got a very complete game and is a great stepper. He’s got great pace and the skills to put his outsides away,” said Drury. Taipari isn’t the only promising league player to turn out for the school’s first XV. Hornby Panthers second rower Jordan Riki made a handful of appearances for the team last year and is expected to feature at No 8 this season. The year 13 student recently won the under-16s player of the year award at the New Zealand Rugby League awards in Auckland. Taipari could get his first taste of the junior competition on Saturday when the Eels play the Canterbury Bulldogs junior side.

Sutherland returns from US for Junior All Whites trial By Gordon Findlater FORMER Burnside High student Joash Sutherland returned home from the United States last month to push his case for a spot in the All Whites under-20 World Cup squad. Sutherland, 19, played for both Burnside and FC Twenty before leaving for Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, on a scholarship midway through 2015. The midfielder was home over the Christmas period to attend a New Zealand under-20 camp in Auckland. He was the only Christchurch player at January’s fourday Junior All Whites camp. He has his eyes set on this year’s FIFA under-20 World Cup in South Korea, which will take place between May 20 and June 11. “It was a really good experience for me and great to see a lot of the lads there that I haven’t seen in a while. All in all, I think I played well and worked hard. Obviously there are a great group of boys there so it’s going to be a competitive selection to pick from,” said Sutherland. “I’m trying to stay reasonably calm about the whole process.
Obviously to wear the fern is something I’ve dreamed for since I was little and has definitely been one of my many goals. I definitely think I’m capable and at the standard to be a part of the group, but it’s just a matter of what the coaches are looking for at the end of the day.” He has now returned to Xavier University ahead of its spring season, which begins in March. After nearly two years at college, Sutherland is becoming acclimatised to the student athlete environment. “I’ve really enjoyed being over here, meeting people and studying. Being able to play football every day at a good level is something I am really grateful for. Being a student athlete is definitely challenging. From having class in the morning to going straight to training for three hours and then to have one or two more classes in the afternoon is really full on,” said Sutherland. Life during the season is even busier with the team often travelling home from away games on sleeping busses which travel through the night. Sutherland will find out closer to May if he has made the Junior All Whites World Cup squad.

CHALLENGE: Canterbury University staff Diana Hinterleitner, Barbara Albertson and Lawrence Teo have decided to get involved in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge.
Organisations take up cycle challenge CHRISTCHURCH organisations are taking on the rest of the country in a cycle challenge. The Aotearoa Bike Challenge has been set up for the month to encourage organisations to get staff on their cycles for 10 minutes a day. Organisations sign up and earn points for riding and recruiting new members. Opus International Consultants’ Christchurch branch is currently in first place in the 200-499 staff company category, while three other local businesses sit in the top five in the 50-199 staff category. Ara Institute of Canterbury is second in the more than 500 staff category, with the city council sixth and Environment Canterbury eighth. City council major cycle route programme manager Clarrie Pearce
said the challenge was an excellent way for residents to try out cycling at a time when the city was focused on building a cycleway network. “The council has joined this challenge and we’re encouraging other work places to get on board. We are so fortunate to live in a predominantly flat city that is just ideal for cycling, particularly as a commute to work,” Mr Pearce said. The challenge is focused on participation, not distance clocked. Canterbury University enrolment and fees adviser Diana Hinterleitner was the first university staff member to take up the challenge. She was hoping its 1200 other staff would get on board too. “I got involved because I like the idea of an incentive to ride my bike to work,” Ms Hinterleitner said. The challenge runs until February 28.

We have an absolute blast when we’re away. It’s all about having fun. Most of my trips are run annually because they’re so popular, but I’m always adding new destinations - like “Sicily, South Italy & Vatican” + “Cuba”, as people ask for them. Brenda checks out all accommodation before booking it, and ensures the party spends at least a few nights at each place. That way you don’t feel like you’re living out of a suitcase. Many clients now have made over 20 tours with us, one has completed a whopping 27 tours. My clients tell me they keep coming back because
of the size of the groups and our relaxed manner. My motto is ‘There are no strangers, only friends waiting to meet.’ We gather together for breakfast at 8.30am which sets us up for the day and everybody thinks is a very civilised hour. Strengthen your spine, avoid back pain Whether it’s from gardening, lifting something heavy, or twisting awkwardly, most of us will experience low back pain during our lifetime and it can certainly slow us down. An exciting and effective way of resolving and preventing low back or neck pain is Dynamic Spines, a programme run by Muscle People in Christchurch City and Bishopdale. As physiotherapist and director of Muscle People, Laurie Moore, explains: “Spinal strength and stability is the focus of the programme, concentrating on the deep core muscles in the trunk.” The programme is designed to move you beyond pain to a place where you feel confident about taking part in dynamic activities, and significantly reduce recurrence of back pain, she says. Led by physiotherapists, the weekly exercise programme is conducted for small groups, with core stability and spinal muscle control being addressed. Participants experience clear progression each week, which will cross over to their everyday life. “More than 80 per cent of New Zealanders suffer from a significant episode of low back pain during their life,” Laurie says. “Of these, 84 per cent are likely to have a recurrence of back pain within a year.
Research shows that those that undergo a specific spinal strengthening programme are almost three times better off.” The benefits of completing the Dynamic Spines programme: • Stabilise your spine • Increase your core strength • Improve your confidence • Correct causative factors that may relate to ongoing pain and recurrent episodes of low back pain • Specific training for your back A Muscle People client who has completed the Dynamic Spines programmes, Julie, says: “The course has been life-changing. I suffered from severe neck pain and was fearful of any movement. This programme has strengthened up my neck muscles, making me feel confident and like a new woman.” Another participant, Tor, says: After partaking in the Dynamic Spines group exercise programme I definitely feel stronger all over – thigh muscles, arms, general increased stamina. This has helped with my gardening work, with less lower back niggles.” Before you join the Dynamic Spines programme, a physiotherapist will assess your individual needs. The programme is then split into two levels. Laurie explains:

Free qualification builds digital confidence
The New Zealand Certificate in Computing Level 3 (Intermediate User) has been developed to equip students with the digital skills expected in today’s workforce. Ara Computing for Free Academic Team Leader Des Hoogervorst says that learning how to use digital technology and operate online is now a necessity.
“Technology, the workforce and education are evolving. Through this new programme, we work with students to build their confidence with technology step-by-step. Then we show them how they can use it to discover information and come up with solutions.” The certificate introduces students to the types of tools commonly used in a business environment. Students can then apply this knowledge to the specific tools used in their workplace and adapt to new ones as technology advances. One of the advantages about studying through Computing for Free is the community that students become part of. The Level 3 certificate includes an online forum where students can share their insights as they progress through the course. “This experience will enable students to have confident conversations in a digital work
environment. By interacting with people from different industries and backgrounds, students will also learn more about the digital business world.” The qualification covers fundamental digital skills, such as the use of different mobile devices and how to connect these to WiFi and Bluetooth. Students will explore the privacy and security implications of different types of filing systems and file sharing software, including cloud-based storage. Experiencing tools such as Microsoft Office, online presentations, basic HTML editing suites and social media will give students a wide understanding of the digital activities carried out in most businesses. The programme has no fees, is self-paced and flexible. Students can start at any time of the year and can choose to study from home or at one of the Ara Computing for Free locations in Christchurch or Timaru. Enrolments are open now.
Computing for Free focuses on digital skills Ara Institute of Canterbury is preparing students to operate in the digital workplace through Computing for Free. New qualifications are being introduced this year, with a focus on digital literacy. Computing for Free Manager Peter Nock says that the new qualifications reflect today’s digital business environment. They are delivered primarily online and encourage digital collaboration and problem solving. The New Zealand Certificate in Computing Level 3 (Intermediate User) is open for enrolment now and equips students with the knowledge to use a broad range of technology to their advantage. “Rather than just teaching students to use specific software well, this qualification encourages them to become independent thinkers. They will learn to use technology to problem solve and come up with their own solutions, instead of relying on a textbook or their tutor.”
While some familiarity with computing is needed to get started, beginners can complete some of Computing for Free’s non-assessed courses as a stepping-stone to build their basic skills and confidence first.
The New Zealand Certificate in Computing Level 4 (Advanced User) will give students the expertise to analyse more complex data and become more efficient at doing business using technology.
“It doesn’t matter what level of knowledge you have, just come in and talk to us and we can come up with a pathway to suit you. We’re here to support you to fill in the gaps.” With 90% of the course content delivered online, the Level 3 qualification is highly flexible. Students can fit study in around their work and family commitments, and progress at their own pace. They can choose to study from home, the office, or at one of our Computing for Free locations in Christchurch or Timaru. A Level 4 qualification will also be introduced in 2017 for people who want to further their skills.
